Most wanted fugitives sought in NYC
From a millionaire socialite to a Brooklyn drug dealer and a predatory pedophile who's eluded authorities for years, many of the FBI's Most Wanted fugitives could be walking the streets or riding the subways of New York City.
The FBI shared information about 10 of those fugitives -- all with Big Apple-area connections -- in the hopes that an eagle-eyed reader might provide a tip that could bring one or more of them to justice.
"We know that some of these fugitives might come to New York to blend into the crowd or hide in plain sight," said FBI agent Jim Margolin of the New York office.
Claudia Beth Librett
A member of one of Philadelphia's wealthiest family and former Upper East Sider, Claudia Librett, 51, may have millions at her disposal as she eludes authorities in a parental kidnapping case. In January 2003, she picked up her daughter, Rachel, now 6, from school in Philadelphia and they vanished. Rachel's father, Michael Marran, of East Hampton, had been awarded custody.
Andrew M. Edwards
New York City native Andrew M. Edwards is wanted on witness-intimidation and narcotics-conspiracy charges. Authorities say Edwards, 23, was part of a drug posse that sold cocaine, crack and marijuana in and around Flatbush. The FBI says Edwards also participated in assaults in February and April of 2003 on cooperating witnesses. He may have ties to Ohio, Florida and Jamaica.
Richard Steve Goldberg
Authorities say Richard Steve Goldberg, 55, molested at least six girls from January to May 2001 and videotaped the acts in his Long Beach, Calif., home. The Brooklyn native and aerospace engineer has visited relatives in nearby Rumson, N.J. Goldberg should be considered armed and dangerous.
Mahboob Pasha
Mahboob Pasha, 39, a former convenience store clerk wanted for allegedly murdering a shoplifter, has been close to being jailed twice. In 1994, the Pakastani native shot and killed a shoplifter at an Atlanta convenience store, authorities say. When Atlanta police told him he was being charged with murder, he asked to use the restroom and disappeared. In 2000, he was arrested in Brooklyn and was returned to Georgia, but he was diagnosed with a serious medical condition and the charges were dismissed. But the diagnosis was wrong , authorities say. He may be back in the New York area and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Yvette Torres
Authorities say Yvette Torres, 42, picked up her daughter, Sabrena Beck, in Hauppauge, Long Island, for a two-week visit in June of 2000 and never returned. The native New Yorker is wanted for parental kidnapping and violating a joint-custody agreement. According to her FBI file, Torres has a bipolar disorder. Fluent in Spanish, Torres also speaks some French and German. Authorities believe she may be in the New York area or has fled to Spain, England or France. Her daughter is 7 and has pierced ears and a small birthmark on her neck.
Daniel Scaife
Daniel Scaife is wanted for allegedly killing a man in Atlanta in March of 1994. Agents believe the native Chicagoan, 33, may have ties to New York because he left behind ID with a city address. Authorities say Scaife got out of his car and fatally shot a man who threw a bottle at his vehicle in a parking lot. He should be considered armed and dangerous.
Joanne Chesimard
Also known as Assata Shakur, New York City native Joanne Chesimard is one of the most infamous fugitives in U.S. history. Chesimard escaped the Clinton Correctional Institution for Women in Hunterdon County. on Nov. 2, 1979. A member of revolutionary activist group the Black Liberation Army, Chesimard and two others were stopped by state trooper on the New Jersey Turnpike. A gunfight ensued, leaving one trooper dead and another wounded. Chesimard was sentenced to life in prison in 1977. Authorities believe Chesimard, who is about 50, may be hiding in Cuba. There is a $1 million reward.
Robert William Fisher
A former fireman who was born in Brooklyn, Robert William Fisher, 45, is wanted on charges of slitting the throats of his two children and fatally shooting his wife before he burned down his Arizona home. He has been on the lam since April 2001. Fisher fled with a .223-caliber rifle, a shotgun, and several handguns. Fisher is considered armed and dangerous.
Victor Manual Gerena
A native New Yorker, Victor Manuel Gerena is wanted for his alleged role in a 1983 armored truck depot heist in West Hartford, Conn. A former Wells Fargo guard, Gerena, 47, is accused of taking fellow security guards hostage at gunpoint and injecting them with a chemical that causes sleep. Nineteen people, all believed to be members of the Puerto Rican nationalist group Machateros, took part in the $7 million heist, according to the FBI. There is a $1 million reward.
Luis Rosado
Born around 1950 in New York City, Luis Rosado and an accomplice allegedly robbed a car dealership in Highland Park, Ill. at gunpoint in 1981. Rosado and his partner were caught, arrested and charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and theft. He also is an alleged member of the Machateros group. Rosado posted bail and vanished. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for Rosado, who has family living in the New York City area.
