ITALIAN. Red-sauce central, this historic restaurant has been dispensing its own brand of Southern Italian food since 1901. Not the most prepossessing location--right beside the Gowanus Canal--but it's a hangout all the same.
You'll find an older crowd here, local traditionalists as well as some who made the move out to the suburbs years ago but come back to keep up with the old neighborhood. The facade has had a facelift: They put in the French doors a couple of years ago. But inside, all is as it was: attentive service, curved red banquettes, Venetian murals, and classic Italian cooking.
